How to Measure Your Kitchen Backsplash
paul halferty
A backsplash is a simple way to dramatically update your kitchen, and with a few quick measurements you will be ready to get started.
What you will need:
Some kitchens are one long rectangle. Most however, have elements such as windows and cabinets that break up the area into smaller sections. It is important to be organized and take into account every area that will need tile.
Step 1: On a sheet of paper sketch your backsplash.
Step 2: Divide your wall into rectangular sections.
Step 3: Measure each section (height and legnth) in inches and add those numbers to your sketch.
Step 4: To find the area of each section, multiply height and length and add that number to your sketch.
Step 5: Add the areas for each section and divide by 144.
Step 6: Finally… factor in at least 10 percent extra for cuts.
Congratulations!
You have found the area of your backsplash in square feet! Remember to take your measurements and sketch with you when shopping for tile.
One last thing… when calculating how much tile you will need for your project, don’t forget finished edges. Areas where the tile meets the wall. You can opt for a glazed edge, or you can choose to finish your backsplash with trim.
Tile is known for its water resistance and easy cleaning, but it does require some upkeep. With the right maintenance routine, your tile floors, and walls will look great and last for years.
